Short turn signal? 2013 fusion

Recommended Posts

Last night my '13 fusion started doing something odd. The turn signal was stopping after ~5-7 clicks. I'm not talking about the "quick" 3 click signal. I'd be sitting at a light with my turn signal on and it would shut off. This has happened repeatedly since last night. Anyone else seen this issue?

When you are hitting the turn signal, is the lever bouncing back and making contact in the other direction and canceling the turn signal? It sounds like you are flicking the lever harder when it does it. Make sure you are guiding the lever back to center with your finger rather than just letting it go flying.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I can rule this out...

This will most likely be a problem with the SCCM (steering column control module, no I'm not kidding). The SCCM is part of the clockspring under the steering wheel, everything in the column is connected to it. The SCCM signals to the Gateway module and the instrument cluster via the HS2-CAN network, which passes the data to the BCM on the HS1-CAN network, and the BCM activates the turn signal LED's and manages their flash rate. There used to be only HS-CAN and MS-CAN, and the gateway was built into the cluster, NOW the gateway is separate, and there are 3 HS-CAN busses and an MS-CAN. Your 2013 Fusion is the first car with the new network topology.

I hope you can forgive your dealer technician for having to take a couple swings at it, it's all VERY new, and we haven't all had class time on it yet. I personally am waiting in line for a 3 day class in Detroit for the new Advanced Vehicle Networks, followed by 2 days on 1.0, 1.5, 1.6, 2.0 and 3.5L EcoBoost systems.

There are more technicians waiting than can be quickly trained on the latest tech.

Wow, so can I assume one HS-CAN bus couldn't handle all the network traffic? Funny how CAN was designed to reduce the amount of wiring but now it seems to be increasing again. Too bad they just couldn't increase the speed of the bus rather than needing to have four different busses. Perhaps it was because of too many devices on the bus? Having to check out all those networks when something electronic doesn't work doesn't sound like much fun for a technician. Are all four CAN busses pinned into the DLC or do you have to go through the gateway to access some with a scan tool?

Only HS1 and HS2 pin out to the DLC, the others are in the back. I wouldn't want to have to pin the oscope into them to monitor the bus. I'm told that making HS-CAN any faster would have necessitated moving beyond a simple twisted pair, which would make diag harder than just sectioning off the bus into multiple groups and using a dedicated gateway to act as a network switch or a router (not quite sure what LAN device to compare it to). I do know that if I had to diag a bus that was composed of multiple twisted pairs (like one made of CAT5), I'd probably lose my mind.

My 2013 did this same basic thing yesterday, but would flash for around 4-5 seconds and stop.

but mine did it when i had the steering wheel already turned about well trying to make a left turn, and at this time has only down it then. did a Left turn with the turnsignals on for least 45 seconds (JUST missed the light and was the 5th car in the line up) and no a problem, and was like that the rest of the day.

Also does anyone know if they still use a cancling cam to cancle the turnsignals like older cars, or are they using a Steering wheel Angle sensor? SInce i wonder if the later maybe acting up if thats the case?

I've been dealing with this issue since Sept. of '13 (2013 Ford Fusion Titanium) but the servicing dealer always replys "could not duplicate". It's sporadic...almost seems "buggy" because it won't do it for a while and then it'll happen multiple times. For instance, I have 9 recordings of it happening this morning and those were taken after multiple instances before deciding to capture it.

Any advice on how to push Ford to fix? I've already tried the dealer (multiple times) and Ford Customer Relations.

Unfortunately, while a video recording will prove that it IS happening, it won't provide any diagnostic help. Advice: let the dealer give you a loaner for 3 or 4 days while the tech drives YOUR vehicle home and back and whatever else. In that space of time he WILL experience it, and once he does he'll have a lot more to go on.

I have this problem sometimes, but I can't reproduce it reliably, and I doubt a dealership will be able to either. I just got it back due to an RCM issue. Airbags, traction control, and all other electronic systems being gone is something I can't deal with, but I can handle hitting the signal stalk again when necessary.

Were you able to get this fixed? Mine just starting doing this yesterday. I'm afraid the dealer won't do anything about it if I can't replicate it.

The dealer will need to replicate this in order to be diagnose it, dragonwithane. Send me a PM details, including the mileage and VIN; I'll do some research.

turn signal prematurely cancelling on you? YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES!!!!! :swear:

I can never "recreate" it so it occurs sporadically. Example...I'm at a long light and it cancels! I step on the gas after sitting at a long light and it cancels! I start turning INTO my turn and it cancels! These are not the three blink lane change things...it cancels prematurely on me CONSTANTLY!!!!

After having the GM ride with me multiple times after it acts up, the dealership recently just changed the turn signal switch. It worked for a couple of weeks aaannnnddddd...it's back! :(

I NEED this corrected. I consider this a safety issue. I want to PREVENT an accident because I had engaged the turn signal, it cancels and I get clobbered because while I thought the turn signal was engaged, the other driver didn't see it...I hope this is clear.

The dealership has already called Ford only to have the dealership tell me that they were told..."they are not aware of any such issue". So...do I go back to the dealer and ask/demand them to replace what is it called...the SCCM????

Please...someone from Ford reply to HOW this issue can be resolved!!!!!

Thank you!

So, this weekend I'm driving home and I get this warning. It said power steering failure something or another. I have set up an appt for a diagnostic test next week. This morning, I start having this problem. The turn signal will only stay on for a couple clicks and then goes off. Glad to know I am not the only one with this problem.

Welcome to the site, jillybeanbrooks! I'm Crystal, the Ford Service rep here. Going to the dealer for diagnosis is a great next step; come back and tell us what you hear. How many miles are on your Fusion? I'll investigate some ways to help.

I've been experiencing this issue for the last few years as well. I've taken it into the dealership and of course it doesn't have the issue with them. I've noticed that when the issue occurs that if I turn the steering wheel all the way to each side and then back to the center position it will start working again which leads me to think it is an issue with the sensor that turns the signal off after your turn.

Of course, according to the technician they have never seen this before. I wonder if we just got the bad batch in the beginning. My car was ordered and delivered in Jan 2013 so it was one of the first ones out there.

2013 Titanium here. Just recently bought the vehicle and I get this regularly. It seems to happen mostly with the left turn signal. Sometimes its while just sitting there it will stop, other times it will stop when i start to turn. Very annoying.

So I'm assuming nobody has a fix for this yet? Mine started a couple months ago. Intermittently. Can't reproduce on demand. I've tried everything. I'm even keeping track of the weather and driving conditions. I thought it was heat a first but then it happened this morning and its only 70. I see a few replies from Ford "Service" people but no answers. And I see people saying the dealer can't do anything if they can't reproduce it. Can someone from Ford give me an answer here or do I need a lawyer? This IS a safety issue at this point. FYI: I get my lawyers free through work so it won't cost me a dime to raise a stink. I'd rather not go there but I will.
