Short turn signal? 2013 fusion

Recommended Posts

Actually, I have tried that because I'd rather fix it myself than waste my time taking it in. Safety? Absolutely! I use my turn signal all the time and people not knowing you are changing directions is an issue. As a firefighter I've seen the results many times over. If turn signals are required to pass inspection then I would assume it is legally considered a safety issue. Try changing lanes in front of police car without signaling, watch what happens. If it takes a lawyer to get it fixed then that is how I will go. Like I said I'd rather not. It would be much easier to have the dealership/Ford recognize that this is an issue and fix it. As they have done with the locking rear seat belt issue. That was placed under an extended safety warranty even though not everyone experiences it. I love my Fusion. This is my second but little issues like this will send me to a new manufacturer eventually.

Can't you just turn it back on again, or if that doesn't work just hold it? Or the absolutely worst case - stick your arm out the window.

As for not using turn signals at all - happens around here more often than not and I've never seen a cop pull somebody over.

Not saying it isn't a problem or shouldn't be fixed, but don't exaggerate.

Seriously? I should hold my turn signal on? Stick my arm out the window? I guarantee that is the turn signal doesn't stay on it doesn't pass inspection. Turning the signal on again doesn't always work. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. Do you actually drive a Fusion? Did you pay for it yourself? Would you want to drive around holding your turn signal on? Do you not have basic expectation on what should and shouldn't work on your car? I don't like how it won't let me default the audio connection to bluetooth but that isn't a necessity. Turn signals are. I'm not really sure why you care if I involve a lawyer. Not exaggerating. Won't cost me a dime so I have nothing to lose and everything to gain. And if I win then others will have this problems fixed too. If I lose then I'm still in the same boat I'm in now. I'll be sure to update you if this goes to court since you appear worried about it.

Mine doesnt stay on, even if holding it. Sorry but I'm with nyukcubed...if this is a problem during inspection, it will not pass. Mine is so random that I have no idea when it is going to do it. Also, the car recently started just shutting off while idling right after start up. I never thought i'd feel that my car was the biggest piece of crap I've ever bought, but it really has been. I wish now I wouldn't have traded in my Nissan...it was a much better car until someone hit me.

You can rant and rave all you want but it's not a safety issue. That doesn't mean it's not a problem or that it shouldn't be fixed.

If it can be reproduced that easily then take it to the dealer and get it fixed. If they don't know how to fix it then a lawyer isn't going to help.

Going to keep going there? Try searching Google first. This is from 2012 and the first one I saw. I'm sure I can find more if you would like. If you car won't pass a safety inspection it is considered an unsafe car and you can't drive it. How much clearer does it have to be?

A study conducted by the Society of Automotive Engineers made a rather surprising claim when presented last week in Dayton, Ohio: Turn signal neglect is causing millions of crashes per year and may be more dangerous than distracted driving.

SAE observed a total of 12,000 lane-changing and turning vehicles and concluded 25 percent of drivers neglected to signal when turning and a whopping 48 percent neglected to do so when changing lanes. Applying these percentages to U.S. drivers as a whole translates to 750 billion instances of turn signal neglect per year – or more than 2 billion instances per day, according to the study.

The study estimated that approximately 2 million crashes per year are a direct result of this issue.

By comparison, the U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that about 950,000 crashes are the direct result of distracted driving (driving while texting, talking on the phone, eating, putting on makeup, etc.).

"This is a first-of-its-kind report on a subject that amazingly, has never been studied," said Richard Ponziana, president of RLP Engineering and author of the report. "The turn signal is one of the very original automotive crash prevention devices and this simple driver-to-driver communication device remains extremely effective, but only when it is accurately displayed as required by law."

"The turn signal can no longer be considered 'optional' and all drivers have an ongoing duty to use it, just as they have a duty to stop at a stop sign or at a red light."

It does actually say Safety. This is for Virginia.

Chapter 10. Motor Vehicle and Equipment Safety

§ 46.2-1000. Department to suspend registration of vehicles lacking certain equipment; officer to take possession of registration card, license plates and decals when observing defect in motor vehicle; when to be returned.

The Department shall suspend the registration of any motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer which the Department or the Department of State Police determines is not equipped with proper (i) brakes, (ii) lights, (iii) horn or warning device, (iv) turn signals, (v) safety glass when required by law, (vi) mirror, (vii) muffler, (viii) windshield wiper, (ix) steering gear adequate to ensure the safe movement of the vehicle as required by this title or when such vehicle is equipped with a smoke screen device or cutout or when such motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer is otherwise unsafe to be operated.

Any law-enforcement officer shall, when he observes any defect in a motor vehicle as described above, take possession of the registration card, license plates, and decals of any such vehicle and retain the same in his possession for a period of fifteen days unless the owner of the vehicle corrects the defects or obtains a new safety inspection sticker from an authorized safety inspection station. When the defect or defects are corrected as indicated above the registration card, license plates, and decals shall be returned to the owner.

And this is Georgia. Should be of interest to you:

§ 40-8-25. Brake lights and turn signals required

(a) It shall be unlawful for any person to sell any motor vehicle manufactured after January 1, 1954, including any motorcycle or motor driven cycle manufactured after January 1, 1954, in this state or for any person to drive such vehicle on the highways unless it is equipped with at least one brake light meeting the requirements of Code Section 40-8-26.

(B) If a motor vehicle is manufactured with two brake lights, both must be operational.

© No person shall sell or offer for sale or operate on the highways any motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer registered in this state and manufactured or assembled after January 1, 1954, unless it is equipped with mechanical or electrical turn signals meeting the requirements of Code Section 40-8-26. This subsection shall not apply to any motorcycle or motor driven cycle manufactured prior to January 1, 1972.

So I'm assuming nobody has a fix for this yet? Mine started a couple months ago. Intermittently. Can't reproduce on demand. I've tried everything. I'm even keeping track of the weather and driving conditions. I thought it was heat a first but then it happened this morning and its only 70. I see a few replies from Ford "Service" people but no answers. And I see people saying the dealer can't do anything if they can't reproduce it. Can someone from Ford give me an answer here or do I need a lawyer? This IS a safety issue at this point. FYI: I get my lawyers free through work so it won't cost me a dime to raise a stink. I'd rather not go there but I will.

2013 Fusion SE

So what did they say when you took yours in? I'm assuming you did; after all, most reasonable people don't just jump straight to a lawyer (except maybe lawyers). If Ford can't fix it, your lawyer must be extremely talented with cars if he can. Maybe if you told us more of your story, we'd be more sympathetic to your anger. And you can't measure dicks with a mod and expect to be able to login later, just sayin.

I wonder if this is like the power window thing, where if it stops Auto Up or AutoDown, There seems to be a Toggle, it's because someone held the button up or down too long... the fix is to hold it for over 5 seconds that will toggle it back on if it's off.

  • 4 years later...

Hi.. first time here.. just got a new to me 2013 SE 2.0.   Searching I found this topic..  same thing is happening to me.. was hoping I could just replace the signal arm, but it looks like it may be a lot more involved than that.

Can anyone tell me if this has been resolved yet and what the solution is?  Thanks.
