2011 Fusion died in garage totally dead battery

Recommended Posts

I tried to start the car in the garage and the battery was totally dead. I then tried to shift to neutral so I could roll the car back so I could jump it next to my other car. I could not shift it due to the battery being too dead. I connected a battery charger and charged the battery. I managed to get everything working except the car will not turn over. It sounds like it tries for a split second then stops. I left the charger on the car overnight, in the morning the car was making clicking sounds, some lights were part way on, and the battery was only partially charged. (with the charger still connected. I believe it turns off when full charged).

There was no indication anything was going wrong ahead of time. Does anyone have any ideas on what the cause might be??

Thanks,

DK

Oh gosh - do you think it might be a DEAD BATTERY? If it has a bad cell it won't charge. The only other possibility is a bad connection at the terminals.

Clean the terminals and if that doesn't work replace the battery. If it's still under the 3/36K warranty the dealer will replace it for free.

Thanks for your smart ass help yes I think it may be a dead battery. I also know the car had zero signs of any battery issues before this. What I was wanting to know is whether anyone knew of any conditions that would drain a battery.

If something simply drained the battery one time it would have recharged and been fine. It sounds like the battery is dead - not just discharged. If cleaning the terminals doesn't fix it then you need a new battery. It's that simple.

My 2010 Fusion did that no warning that anything was wrong. Just all of a sudden. AAA came out and did a load test and the battery was in fact bad. Turned out to be a dead cell.

My 2011 Fusion airbag light came on when starting the car one day. The next day the battery was dead and would not start the car. AAA confirmed the battery was bad. Replaced the battery and the car starts fine but the airbag light is still on. Will I need to take car to a dealer for a reset or can Autozone handle this. Ford warranty will not work for this car.

And Ford does not know what it is. I got a 2014 Fusion 2.5L with less than 2100 miles that has had THREE batteries installed at the dealer and been in for a dead battery 4 times and is presently still in the dealer. No after market items added. Drove it 250 miles on the highway, put in the garage at 4:30pm, never used the headlights and at 7:30am the next morning .... dead again. This thing has left me stranded with a dead battery 5 times. Ford has kept this car 12 days and now working on 9 days and does not have a clue what is wrong. They say it only has 10 milliamp draw and has not reproduced the problem onsite. Have you noticed that the new Fusions DO NOT HAVE a door or trunk lock except under the DRIVERS door only? Whats up with that? Customers buy new cars for dependability. WAKE UP FORD.

Why do you need more than one exterior lock on one door? 19 times out of 20 you'd only be using the driver's door lock anyway.

If it does it in your garage but not at their shop then it's either intermittent which can be really hard to find or something in your garage or the way you park it is draining the battery overnight. Could be RFI triggering the remote receivers. Could be a bad module. But if they can't reproduce it then how can they fix it?

Has it been in the garage every time it died or has it also died outside the garage/away from the house?

BMW was among the first to eliminate the passenger side door lock, probably about 20 years ago. Ford is certainly not alone in this. I doubt you'll find too many modern cars that have one.

KaptainK, I have a 2014 Fusion 2.0L with the same problem. When I went to look at the car on the dealer lot, the salesman went to get the keys and had to manually open the door and jump start the car cause the battery was dead...ON THE LOT. Well I ended up buying the car on the condition they would put a brand new battery in it. They did, but a couple months later I was away for about five days, came back and car battery was dead. Had battery tested and said it was fine. Since then it has all of the sudden died twice...getting fed up with this. This is obviously a problem with the fusion as it seems I am not the only one who has had this problem.

I was wondering if you ever got the problem resolved and if Ford Service (Crystal) was able to help. I had it in the dealership already once and they we unable to figure out what the problem was.

Hi Bjdemp,

When was your most recent dealer visit? Please let me know, along with your mileage, and I'll check out some options.

Has anyone resolved this issue? I bought the wife a 2014 fusion se less than three months ago. 38000 miles. Last week, she went to leave, dead battery. Jumped it off. Two days ago, the same thing except this time it wouldn't jump, I had to hook a charger to it. The charger showed no faults. Took it to the dealer and they have no idea what the issue is.

I too have a 2014 Fusion SE 2.0 with 38000 miles and we were out yard sailing, stopped turned off car for about 15 minutes and when we came back it was dead as a door nail. Tried turning it over and just heard the clicking of the ignition. We got a jump start and everything was just fine for about 2 days, then last evening got a call from the wife that the car was dead again in the parking garage. She got a jump and was able to drive it 35 miles to the house. This morning it started but I could hear it laboring, so i figured it's just a crappy OE battery intended to go out at about 2,000 miles after the warranty expired, but I didn't play Fords game with taking to the shop, testing and all that crap...just headed down to Autozone picked up a Durlast and threw it in. Starts fine for now, so I'm just hoping its a simple dead battery issue and not something more sinister.

Short trips will kill the battery as it doesn't run long enough to recharge after starting. You could also have some parasitic drains. I've also found you need to top off the battery with distilled water every year or so. Hopefully the new one works for a few more years with no problems.
