Those hoods are hot - wish they were a production option. Are those MRT hoods?

Thanks Robert,

Yes MRT is the hood manufacturer. www.mrt-direct.com

There is a raised portion on the hood behind each opening which would allow many painting options but I decided for me that what you see in the pic was bold enough while still being somewhat understated. :shift:

Is there a way to make a functional type of Ram Air system? Just curious.

Not likely. The air box is behind the driver's side headlight. Even if it was "functional" the ducts would have a huge u-turn built in that directed any air back to the front of the car. Removing the headlamp is more efficient.

Hood scoops are leftovers from the days of carburated intakes.

Many late model fuel injected cars have functional ram-air systems (hood scoops).

Camaro SS, Firebird/Trans Am There are even some V6 Pontiacs with functional ram air.

As far as turns or bends the Camaro's system was made by SLP (street legal performance) with the intake in the front center of the hood which had a split underneath, one going to the right and one going to the left, actually looking like a Ram's horn which then forced air into the filter housing. From intake to filter box it was probably around 3 linear feet to the filter. There has to be some type of bend, offset, or turn to help disperse any type of moisture or water infiltration. I onwed one so I've seen it first hand.

So a better statement would be to say that carburated intakes are leftover but hood scoops aren't.

Subura WRX

Toyota 4-Runner

Tuscany edition F-150

Mustangs

many others on the road today

Hard to agree with you on them being outdated (leftover) when Chevrolet is getting ready to produce another factory vehicle that has a hood intake port and the vehicle won't even be available until 2009.....it can be seen clearly below....

Robert,

MRT says that they are looking into a way to make this hood functional on the next generation. They are very early into the production of this hood (Gen1) as I think I actually have 2 of the first 10 produced. Their own concept vehicle was a V6 Fusion with a Tremec 5-speed manual tranny. They are located in Plymouth, MI which I don't think is too far from you.

so, how do you decide which one to drive on a daily basis?

One is the wife's daily driver. The other one I use on weekends and trips as I have the benefit of not having to drive it daily due to the use of a company vehicle.

Whereabouts in Vegas are you Dan? I Spent a little time in Henderson, NV. The Nascar track facility in Vegas in awesome. I haven't been there since they upgraded the track again.

i'm in North Vegas, close to where 215 intersects 15... right by Nellis AFB (where i'm stationed)... also, right by the track... in fact, i drive through the speedway grounds on my way to base everyday. :shift:

Word of the day: "Non-Functional."

There's many vehicles today with hood scoops, sure. Most of them are aesthetic though. The only functional hood work on the Mustangs today is the GT500 and it's not an intake scoop, but rather an exhaust.

Word of the day is "VAGUE"

Your original post did not distinguish between functional or non-functional. It just said hood scoops are leftover. I'm not here to force you to like hood scoops, everyone is different and I have the ability to accept that, technically we are bordering on perceptions of a scoop. I personally feel a scoop is a totally different animal than the dual port openings on my hoods. The Camaro picture shown above isn't what I would call a 'scoop' either. A scoop is a WRX hood which is completely different than my hoods. :headspin:

Some people don't like white cars either but that never influences what decision I make for myself.

This is TODAY... 2007 Saleen Mustang with a FUNCTIONAL shaker style hood SCOOP.

C'mon Meelan, you need to do some fact checking before blurting out these kinds of statements. There are some ACTUAL car guys on some of these forums...Maybe it's the formaldehyde from those FEMA trailers close to you :poke:

If there are anymore questions the full story is here, copy and put in browser... http://www.musclemustangfastfords.com/feat...leen/index.html

Since we're being ticky-tack: Saleen is an aftermarket modfier. Doesn't qualify as a production Mustang. My statement stands.

Guess I've built up an immunity to formaldehyde. :headspin:

Saleen is a certified Ford production vehicle just as SLP was for Chevrolet and GM with the Camaro SS. The cars are sent from the factory to their production facilities before hitting any dealer floors. If its aftermarket as you say I don't know of any manufacturer that is warranting aftermarket items. Unless they are a certified and officially licensed supplier for that manufacturer, THEY DON'T.

Saleen has had a relationship with Ford since the early 80's. Most of their work involves suspension, brake, engine and many cosmetic enhancements. I can provide a link for this too if needed.

Most of your posts are blanket statements and when someone calls you out on them (or should I say shows you the facts) you start searching for a way out of said statement. Cobra Dan already posted a factory 03/04 Mustang Cobra with a functional scoop. You already moved your arguement from Hood scoops are 'leftover' to 'non-functional' and now to some are 'not production'.

Try getting a Camaro SS or Saleen product without proof of ownership of a certified VIN #.

Same idea as Mercedes has with AMG...is that not a production vehicle also.

BMW with their M3 Series.

Fords SVT division

Dodge with the SRT division

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree again.

Here are some more vehicle with hood port openings or scoops:

Mercedes SL 500

Toyota RAV 4

Toyota Tacoma P/U

Toyota Celica GT

BMW mini cooper

Your statement may still stand but it doesn't stand on the basis of fact, please see below.

2008 Dodge Magnum SRT has a fully FUNCTIONAL hood scoop which can be seen and read about here...

http://www.cars.com/go/features/autoshows/...mp;model=Magnum

Subaru Outback XT's with the intercooled engine option are fitted with a fully FUNCTIONAL hood scoop. That can be seen and read about here...

2008 Subaru Impreza WRX has a fully FUNCTIONAL hood scoop seen here....

Hood port openings/scoops/air extractors are so leftover/yesterday that BMW has them on a M3 concept vehicle that was debuted at the 2007 Geneva Auto Show....

I beleive we were discussing hood scoops specifically. Not heat exhaust vents.

Since you didn't get it the first time, here's a re-run... concentrate:

"Hoods scoops are leftovers from the days of carburated intakes."

This is a completely arguable point with specific relation to production cars.

"There's many vehicles today with hood scoops, sure. Most of them are aesthetic though. The only functional hood work on the Mustangs today is the GT500 and it's not an intake scoop, but rather an exhaust."

Whatever point of view you want to take, wonderful. I think scoops for most production cars are a relic performance motif to emphasize sportiness of a vehicle whether the vehicle actually possesses that characteristic or not.

I guess you had to pick the BMW picture to make your point only because the 3 links listed above that are fully functional HOOD SCOOPS on some of today's PRODUCTION vehicles.

2008 Magnum SRT, the Subaru Outback and the Subaru Impreza are not production vehicles, dude..just give it up. Your hood scoop statement has no merit!

I digress, only because I am tiring of your 'bait and switch' arguement tactics.
